Caoling Historic Trail
This modern day hiking trail began as a migration trail for immigrants traveling from the Taipei Basin to Lanyang Plain. Along this path lies a 10-kilometer stretch of road called Caoling, which was built by the Qing government over a hundred years ago. Stone tablets laid by the Qing government can be found along the trail.
Surf on the Rocks at Beiguan
Although the fort constructed by the Qing Dynasty in 1819 is no longer standing, modern-day visitors to Beiguan enjoy age-old rock formations and dramatic cliffs that remain untouched by time. This scenic spot has been voted one of the top 8 scenic spots in Yilan County and has been rebuilt into a protected park for all to enjoy.
Turtle Island Sunrise
Since the Qing Dynasty, the sunrise of Turtle Island has been known as one of the eight great scenic spots of Yilan. The island is 12 nautical miles to the northwest of Yilan County and is under military control. The island is 2.9 square kilometers. In areas not blocked by hills, you can see the island from Yilan County. It is the area’s most distinctive landmark. The island is also considered the guardian of Lanyang Plain and a totem of this belief.
Inspired by the island, many artists have mentioned Turtle Island in their works. The island also has great influence over the lives of farmers and fishermen. A popular expression states, “When the clouds come over Turtle Island, the rain will soon pour”. The island got its name because it resembles a turtle. One can see steam coming from its head, and its tail is said to swing. People here like to think that the turtle is alive. The island is an abundant natural ecosystem.
An expression people often say is, “Turtle might turn around”. This means “something impossible”. Turtle Island looks different depending on your position and the weather. The island is a spiritual symbol for people of Yilan who leave their hometown.
Whale Watching
Turtle Island has an abundant marine ecology because of the Black Tide Warm Current which passes northward through here all year long. It is one of the three major fishing areas in Taiwan—primarily shrimps, crabs, squids, octopuses, and branchiostegidae are caught here. The migration of many kinds of fish to this area attracts whales and dolphins. This is a popular whale and dolphin watching spot.
Turtle Island is located about 10 kilometers east of Yilan. People in Yilan regard the island as a spiritual landmark. It was named Turtle Island because it looks like a turtle floating in the sea. Under the jurisdiction of Toucheng Town, Yilan County, its area is 60 acres, 3.3 kilometers from east to west, and 1.7 kilometers wide. The “head” and “shell” consist of two volcanoes, and the “tail” gets its appears from a thin sandbank which changes with the tide—just like a turtle swinging its tail.
Besides appreciating the beauty of whales and dolphins, the eight spectacular scenic spots are definitely worth a visit.
Obervar ballenas y delfines

Jinche Orchids Park
The founder of Jinche Company (the owner of the famous Mr. Brown Coffee) is from Yilan and is a great admirer of orchids. Not too long ago, he built a state-of-the-art greenhouse in Yilan. As a result, over one million orchids bloom here every year thanks in part to the innovative greenhouse and agreeable weather.
Orchids grown here are known for their health and beauty and attract admirers from the world over. Ninety percent of the orchids grown in this park are exported to Japan, where they are admired for their size, smell, and beauty. The park is the biggest in northern Taiwan and contains a research laboratory for genetic analysis. Plans are underway to create an orchid museum and an educational facility.

“Climbing Competition” at Toucheng
The largest and the most special of Taiwan’s folklore and folk rituals is the “Climbing Competition” at Toucheng, which has an inseparable relation with the development of Lanyang Plain. Kailan Elder Wu Sha led his clan to enter Lanyang Plain, and Touchen as the first settlement. In their exploration, wars, plagues, and disasters tortured the pioneers. For the deceased, their spirits found no homes. People are introduced to the legendary ritual – “Climbing Contest" during the Ghost Month to show their memory of and to worship the ancestors. Each year, many teams and individuals participate in this event, marking the climax for the Ghost Month and drawing a perfect ending to the Chung Yuan Festival.
